On May 9th, 2025, I had the pleasure of being interviewed on The Day Times Show on BBC Radio Derby, where the fabulous Becky Measures was sitting in as host. What a joyful and affirming experience it was!
It was strange at first to be sitting in the waiting area, listening to the show live on air, and waiting for my turn to be interviewed. Family and friends texted me that they were tuned in, and I was so worried about dropping something or forgetting to say the right things. After a nerve-wracking few minutes, I was invited in to speak with Becky.
I needn’t have worried at all. We spent time discussing Derby’s first-ever Neurodiversity and Me event — a ground-breaking, inclusive celebration led by a neurodivergent adult and designed to connect, uplift, and support our local community. Held at St Luke’s Church in Stockbrook, the event ran from 12pm to 4pm on Saturday 10th of May 2025, and was completely free to attend. The atmosphere was full of energy and warmth, with live entertainment and a fantastic selection of stalls, all aimed at connecting people in Derby to the support services they might need.
It was truly magickal to talk about the event live on air, and Becky made the experience unforgettable. She was not only incredibly welcoming and down-to-earth but also genuinely interested in the topic. Her friendly nature instantly put me at ease, so much so that at one point, we got so caught up in conversation that she nearly forgot we were on the radio!
Being part of this show was a wonderful opportunity to raise awareness about neurodiversity and highlight how empowering community-led events like Neurodiversity and Me can be. I’m so grateful to BBC Radio Derby and to Becky for the platform, the conversation, and the laughs.
