Event Review: Neurodiversity & Me – A Celebration of Community, Connection, and Empowerment!

The “Neurodiversity & Me” event, held on Saturday, 10th May 2025 at St Luke’s Church in Derby, was nothing short of inspirational. A vibrant celebration of neurodivergent voices, believed to be the first of its kind. The community gathering brought together individuals, families, professionals, and advocates to share stories, resources, and creativity in a welcoming and validating space.

The programme was rich and varied, offering something for everyone. Informative talks covered a range of crucial topics—from diagnosis and education to employment and mental health. Highlights included Madeleine Levy’s moving discussion on surviving the education system with Asperger’s, and the empowering presence of Adrianne Robinson, the Neurodiverse Beauty Queen, who shared her experience living with Dyspraxia.Panels and presentations by groups like Spectrum Heads, Neuro Hub Derby, and Kelsey Family CIC tackled difficult issues such as coping mechanisms and substance abuse with honesty and care, while a lively and heartfelt neurodivergent panel was hosted, which gave attendees the chance to ask real and raw questions.

The entertainment line-up brought even more energy to the afternoon. Performances by Raphael Tate, Charlie Sanderson, Matthew Fowler, and many others added warmth, humour, and heart to the event, showcasing the incredible creative talents within the neurodivergent community in Derby.

Over 20 local stalls from organisations like Wellbeing Wise and Freckle Creative provided resources, handmade crafts, and well-being advice. This was particularly powerful for me as a neurodiverse individual, as I was able to find an 8-week support group to explore my neurodiverse identity, gain support for my energy drink addiction, meet several new friends, and I did not stop talking or smiling all day. This was the first time that my younger self felt seen, heard, understood, and validated for the beautiful neurodiverse human that I am. The art workshop by Bello Mind & Soul created a space for mindful expression, and the Caribbean Carvery was a big hit, providing delicious food that kept everyone fuelled and smiling.

“Neurodiversity & Me” was not just an event—it was a statement. A statement that neurodivergent people deserve to be seen, heard, celebrated, and supported. It proved how powerful community-led action can be in promoting awareness, inclusion, and lasting connections. It was organized by Time 2 Talk Men’s Mental Wealth CIC and supported by Community Lottery funding and Derby Theatre Communities Fund. This event was organised by Neurodivergent people, for neurodivergent people, which is incredibly important in a day and age where Neurodiversity events can be organized by big companies who themselves are not neurodivergent.

Here’s to this becoming a regular feature in Derby’s calendar—because after this incredible debut, it’s clear that Neurodiversity & Me has sparked something truly special. Let this event not just stop in Derby but be hosted city-wide across the UK. This is my dream for the future. Special thanks to everyone involved in the organization of the event. You are all spectacular.
